I purchased a Groupon, and I'm glad I did. Bae and I will definitely be back. I had Tlayuda (corn masa tortilla with beans, avocado, onion, tomato, Oaxaca cheese) and Bae had the chicken enchiladas. We were both really impressed. The chips and salsa that we got before our meal were on point. I am a mega fan of salsa verde, and Mi Compadre's was nice and spicy. The salsa roja had a deliciously different flavor in it, too - I'm still trying to put my finger on it. Our service was top-notch. The server was friendly, knowledgeable, and chatted with us about his background. He was super attentive, even with quite a few tables. You know I inquired about allergens. Sometimes when I ask about frying oil, servers answer my questions with some disdain. This guy immediately (and happily) went and checked without needing my request to do so. Thanks, pal. This was a really quality restaurant experience. Mi Compadre is a bit off the beaten path, though, so I hope they stay in business! Given the amazing food and level of service, I have a feeling that we'll be friends for a while.

I was really disappointed by this place. I read the Ann Arbor Observer's great review and decided to give them a try. I even purchased a Groupon deal for 3 $15 coupons because, I was so sure I would like the restaurant and go again in the future. However, I will not be back. My table ordered the nachos as an appetizer and they came with extremely spicy carrots on them. Which didn't add to the dish and just simply seemed misplaced. The carrots were also not listed on the menu as an item that came on the nachos. I really feel that a restaurant should include all items in a dish within the menu description. I then ordered the chicken burrito dinner, fish tacos, and horchata to drink. The burrito was fine (not memorable but, just fine) but the fish was clearly spoiled. I spit out the bite in my mouth and that pretty much ruined the meal for me. I also didn't care for the texture/consistency of the taco shells. They were warm and chewy and grainy. The horchata, which I am accustomed to being made with almond milk, was instead made with rice. It was as though they took rice, gave it a brief blend in a food processor, and then added water to the drink. It was like drinking mashed up cold rice pudding. It was gross! The building also appears run-down, old and dirty from both the outside and inside. Nothing is worse then dining at a restaurant that seems old and dirty. They really should have invested money into fixing up the property before they opened the business. I ended up giving away my Groupons on Craigslist for free as I knew I would never use them.

I found this place though Yelp and stopped by for dinner with a friend. Parking is easy and once you walk in, there are booth to left and right and tables in the middle... self seating, so seat any where you like.... we grabbed a table and the waiter brought water and menu along with chips and salsa... I already knew what I wanted, but I also decided to get their soup as well. If you look by the cash register, they have a sign with specials... don't forget those as some of the special offerings looked good. Between my friend and I, we ordered: - pollo con mole - Tlayudas - Caldo de Marisco - fish soup The chips and salsa's were decent... couldn't tell them apart from other Mexican restaurants... if you run out, ask for more :) - Caldo de Marisco - as the menu states, this is a fish soup... the soup has different fish chunks and shrimps with onions... it does have heavy fish smell, so if you are put off by fish smell, skip this dish. As for taste, decent... ask for extra cilantro and add to the soup and it'll bring out more flavors. - Tlayudas - I guess you can call it a Mexican pizza... the dough they used is not a flour tortilla or corn for that matter.. it's more thicker to compensate the heavy load of toppings.... we ordered with steak - which was bit dry and salty. - Pollo con mole - I expected the mole to be black.. but it was green... either way, the dish was delicious... the mole was seasoned well, the chicken was warm, juicy and easy to break with just using fork. It came with white rice and small patch of greens (no dressing)... I have to say, this was my favorite dish there so far. Service was great, the servers stopped by often and checked on us... whatever we asked for, they provided (extra chips, salsa's, cilantro, etc) - this is why I'm giving 4 stars... looking forward to revisiting to try their breakfast offering and other dishes on the menu.

Clean, simple, neighborhood Mexican diner with authentic Oaxacan street food: tlayudas, memelas, huaraches, etc. Great that we have such options in Ann Arbor now - aside from Taqueria La Casita's sopes, etc. in Ypsi, I haven't seen such antojitos elsewhere. Mexican breakfasts here look good, but they're only served before noon. Will have to come back to try their eggs with molcajete sauce. They also do traditional American breakfast, including homemade corned beef hash and omelettes to order. Our kids loved their caldo de mariscos - like a minestrone soup with big chunks of salmon, tilapia, squid, and shrimp. And the flan, of course, which was refreshingly not swimming in a caramel sauce, and more the consistency of a soft cheesecake. Nothing too fancy here - just a good Mexican diner. The horchata and tamarindo are from a mix, but you can go to TMaz for real agua frescas and wider taco selection. But a nice, new, clean Mexican restaurant offering something new is always to be celebrated!

I had given up on Mexican food in Michigan. There are ok restaurants like Don Juan, and then there are Taco Bell level restaurants like Sabor Latino. This is the real deal. I love how fresh everything is, my particular favorite is the Caldo Marisco and the fish tacos. The soup has chunks of fish and shrimp and a fresh light broth I enjoy. I have been less impressed by the steak dishes but I tend to stay away from those anyways. I think this is the best Mexican restaurant in Ann Arbor and it is right next to my house. I hope it sticks around.

I visited Mi Compadre during their first week "soft opening" in January 2015, when they didn't have a permanent menu, and the subsequent outings were definitely an improvement on an already inexpensive and authentic tasting Mexican diner. The waitstaff is consistently friendly, and seating has been quick, even when things have been busy. They've seemed to balanced out the early days of inadequate amount of wait staffing, and the food has come out in an appropriate length of time, perhaps a bit on the long side of normal - but then maybe that was just my stomach thinking for me. There's free chips and salsa, and the horchata was great. The tamarindo, however, is a bit on the bland side. The steak tlayupas, "mexican pizza", are good as are the chicken mole. Few things to be aware of: - As of February 2015, they're still cash only. - There's a traditional Americana breakfast options until noon! - While the tacos are just listed for lunch, you can have them for dinner - just ask. It's exciting to have an inexpensive Mexican restaurant this far into Ann Arbor (La Fiesta Mexicana, La Fiesta Taquiera, and Temaz Taquiera being much further east of Ann Arbor), and hope they can keep up the tastiness with the cheapness!

Good food, good service, decent price. My SO and I dropped by here for breakfast a couple of weekends ago. I'm not sure exactly what "genuine Mexican" food means in terms of breakfast, but both of our breakfasts were pretty good. I ordered a spicy scrambled egg style dish (sorry, I've forgotten the name, and I can't find a menu online) which was really spicy, and I like spice. Great start to the day. My SO was more restrained and ordered a vegetable/egg dish, very nice as well. Service was mellow and friendly, perfect for a Saturday morning. We took our time, enjoying our food and the relaxed atmosphere. My only comment is on the hours. Mi Compadre advertises itself as a breakfast place, but they don't open until 9 am. That might be okay on weekends (if you're a late riser), but weekdays it just doesn't make sense unless you start work at 10 or you work from home. I'd like to see this place succeed, but I'm afraid they're shooting themselves in the foot with their opening hours.

It's the most genuinely Mexican food I've found in Ann Arbor, but unfortunately, the food is just not that great. I loved the choices, and appreciate the efforts, but the flavors just weren't there, and all kind of ran together. I badly wanted to love this place, but coming from a place where you can regularly get food that's both authentic *and* masterfully done, this was a disappointment. I hope they up their game, though!

Happy to find a new Mexican place in town. Wonderful corn tortillas and very good huevos rancheros. Then we had to add an enchilada--perfectly prepared. My husband talked to cook he liked it so much and we walked away with a to-go pastry that was fabulous. Will be back for lunch or dinner soon.

If you're into fresh masa based cooking, mi compadre should be your compadre. While the tortillas used in the tacos and nachos come from the package, a number of authentic dishes showcase this unique use of masa: sopes being my favorites. While not easily seen on the menu (often misunderstood as "sopa" or soup) if you snag one of the owners, you'll get what I go there for! The Anglo waitperson was clueless and pointed out soups when I asked for the sopes. No biggie at all. Be persistent. The place is clean and cheerful, and a great place to have a fine lunch. Parking is not a problem. The two guys who own and run the place chat amiably trying to make new compadres out of first timers. Opening as late as 9am and offering a fair breakfast menu both Mexican and American, seems like a loss of the 7am into A2 commuters. Who wants pancakes at 10am? Well, sure, a few perhaps. So what are sopes? Thick corn masa cakes with pinched rims sturdy enough to hold lettuce, beans, meat, cheese and whatever you like. All of this is baked and served as warm deliciousness to be eaten with utensils. Two of them make a great lunch for seven bucks. Next time I'll try their enchiladas, the chiles rellenos, the chicken en mole, well...everything, I guess. If you like authentic Mexican, head over and meet your new compadres.

We went with a groupon and tried the tamales and tlayuda. They offer more vegetarian options than many Mexican places and excellent service.

Some of the very best Mexican food I've had, anywhere. I live right around the corner, so I'm just bummed that I haven't discovered this place until a few months after it opened.

Loved it! My boyfriend asked for the Chef's favorite and received a generous half of a chicken with fresh produce, flavorful rice, and warm tortillas. I ordered the tlayuda, a pizza like tortilla dish covered in Oaxaca cheese, fresh lettuce, avocado and tomato. If you want authentic Mexican comfort food, this is the best I've had.

Super casual little Mexican place. At first, the prices seemed high (I'm used to hole-in-the wall Cali taqueria prices), but my tamale dinner with rice and beans was so substantial that I couldn't finish it in one sitting. Saved a tamale and some rice and beans for lunch the next day. Good value in the end. I crave good tamales, and I will definitely be returning for these. They were very tasty, especially with some hot sauce. Something to be aware of -- the Pollo en Mole is actually mole verde (green mole) not the typical chocolate brown mole. My friend was a bit surprised when his dinner arrived, but he said it was very good.

Just stopped in for the first time for lunch today. The food was terrific. I ordered 3 tacos...el pastor, chorizo, and lamb barbacoa. They were all awesome. My wife got the carne asada milanese torta. It was the best torta I've ever had. She was sad when she got full and couldn't eat any more of it. I wasn't because I got to eat the rest of it. The homemade bread is amazing. The waiter put out a fresh tray of churros, and I almost cried because I was too full to eat any. We'll definitely be going back to try some of their other stuff. The staff was really friendly and attentive. This place is a great addition to the neighborhood. From what we had, I'd say it's the best Mexican place in Ann Arbor. Sorry La Casita, I still love you.

I am sorry to write this review because I am going to be sad if this place gets too busy for me to stop by for dinner without a wait, but this is definitely the best Mexican food in Ann Arbor. Do not go here if you want anything too fancy. However, you will enjoy fresh, good ingredients (awesome oaxacan cheese) and exquisite control of spice levels that will please all palates. And really friendly, nice service. I am praying this place is just far enough away from campus that it will thrive without becoming too busy.

When I saw the score was a 4 on Yelp, I said, "Let's go eat there." When we ambled out of the place after, I thought, "Why did it only get 4 stars?" The service was excellent, and the folks running the place took the time to offer tastes of things, answer questions, and really nail down what you're looking to eat. I was warned on several occasions about my dish, bacon-wrapped shrimp in a sauce "de la diabla." It was one of the hottest meals I ever consumed. The great thing was the heat did not substitute the flavor. It was savory and I didn't lose the taste to the temperature. That meal was glorious. My wife had their authentic version of a mexican pizza and it was killer. My 1 year old daughter knocked down most of the chicken quesedilla. The cost was right, the hot salsa for the chips was good, and the ambiance was not over the top. It was fun. They even let me practice my not-so-strong Spanish and we had fun. We're going back regularly.

nice pollo mole! It wasn't too mild. Destined to try the tacos since my Texas background craves it. I wouldn't mind spicier salsa. Will be back with the family for sure!

I went in the other day to check it out as it's a relatively new place. I was greeted by one of the owners, Luis, who was really friendly and helped me out with the menu. He gave me a few recommendations, while the waitress brought out tortillas with an array of house made sauces (I highly reccomend you try their verde!). I ended up going with the "Pollo en mole" which was delectable. The meat was falling off the bone. The owner told me "nothing comes from a can" which I found encouraging. I'll definitely be back soon!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
